Programme Structure – Course Categories

According to the study programme of the Department of Information and Communication Systems Engineering, during the first three years students follow a cycle of mandatory courses, while from the fourth year they choose courses belonging to six scientific cycles (Security of Information and Communication Systems and Privacy; Information Systems and Entrepreneurship; Computer Technologies and Telecommunications; Communication Systems and Networks; Artificial Intelligence and Information Management; Foundations of Computer Science). The diploma thesis is completed in the fifth year of studies. No courses are taught in the 10th semester so that final-year students can focus on their diploma thesis. Department courses are classified as Mandatory Courses (Y), Cycle Courses (MK), Free Electives (EE), and Optional Courses (PM).

  • Mandatory Courses

There are thirty-six (36) mandatory courses that all students must pass. They are distributed evenly across the first six semesters (1st–6th), with six (6) mandatory courses in each semester.

  • Diploma Thesis – English

In addition to the mandatory courses above, all students must complete a Diploma Thesis and pass the English language course.

  • Cycle Courses

In each of the 7th, 8th, and 9th semesters, and for each of the six scientific cycles of the Department, a range of elective courses is offered. Each student must pass at least eight (8) elective courses, with at least four (4) belonging to at least two (2) different cycles, in order to meet graduation requirements. When a course belongs to two or more cycles, the student must declare which cycle it will count towards upon successful completion.

  • Free Elective Courses

These courses do not belong to a specific cycle but count towards the degree and the final grade calculation (see the relevant paragraph of the Study Regulation).

  • Optional Courses

These courses do not count towards the degree or the final grade calculation. An exception (for grade calculation only) applies to optional foreign language courses (see the relevant paragraph of the Study Regulation).
