In the context of ambient intelligence systems, the role of sensor networks is to capture diverse types of information related to individuals, equipment, buildings, and make it available for the provision of sophisticated, unobtrusive, context-aware applications and services. The security and integrity of the data and the communications in the overall architecture is an essential requirement for the end applications and services to be reliable and well accepted by the end-user. This paper presents a context-aware security, privacy and trust framework providing adaptability, flexibility and scalability to support the customisation of real-world wireless sensor networks to a diverse set of application spaces. Scalable framework versions with corresponding sets of suitable security mechanisms are identified to form a complete toolbox solution which fits the architecture of Beyond 3G (B3G) environments. The 'wireless hospital enhanced professional communication' application space serves as an example scenario for the proposed framework, where each security module is designed to adapt accordingly based on the context information available in each communication in the data flow.
Sensor networks are set to become a truly ubiquitous technology that will affect the lives of the people in their application environment. While providing the opportunity for sophisticated, context-aware services, at the same time sensor networks impose great privacy risks. This paper discusses privacy issues in sensor networks, by identifying the requirements for privacy preserving deployments, analysing the challenges faced when designing them, and discussing the main solutions that have been proposed.
Ad hoc and sensor networks highly depend on the distributed cooperation among network nodes. Trust establishment frameworks provide the means for representing, evaluating, maintaining and distributing trust within the network, and serve as the basis for higher level security services. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of trust establishment frameworks for ad hoc and sensor networks. Certain types of frameworks are identified, such as behavior-based and certificate-based, according to their scope, purpose and admissible types of evidence. Moreover, hierarchical and distributed frameworks are discussed, based on the type of ad hoc and sensor networks they are designed for. The review is complemented by a comparative study built both on criteria specific to each category and on common criteria, grouped into three distinct classes: supported trust characteristics, complexity and requirements, and deployment complexity and flexibility.
